I never envisioned my first article for The Shofar to be this way, but unfortunately, this is the current situation.

On Saturday, October 7th, 2023, Israel was attacked by a terrorist organization called Hamas. The holiday of Simchat Torah, or the annual celebration of the completion of the Torah, was being celebrated when 3,000+ missiles were fired in Israel. As of now, over 1,500 people have been killed, and over 6,500 have been wounded. Aside from these casualties, many kidnappings of Jewish men, women, and children have taken place all over the world. Due to this horrible act, we, as the Aleph Zadik Alephs and B’nai Brith Girls, must stand up for our homeland and help in any way we can.

Many different people from all over the order have done something to send aid to our holy land. One BBG from the Nassau Suffolk Region has been raising money for the FIDF and is arranging a fundraiser for Magen David Adom, a rescue healthcare service located all over Israel. Another BBG from the Northern Region East: DC Council has donated to reputable organizations supporting Israel and has educated herself and others on the Israel-Hamas War. The 99th Grand Aleph Board The 79th International BBG Board has also been in constant contact with BBYO’s Israel partner, Maccabi Tzair, and has been working to support them in any way possible.

Donating and forming fundraisers are one way to support Israel, but another thing we need to continue is to check up on your friends, family members, and others who are being affected by the horrible events taking place around the world. Text a friend and let them know that you are a safe person to talk to during this time. Everyone knows someone who might be experiencing this situation, either first or second person. Even if it’s not you who is directly being affected, having empathy for all Jews around the world who are having a hard time due to the acts of anti-semitism and brutality is important during these circumstances.

The acts of kindness supporting Israel and the Jews are currently tremendous and extremely helpful, and to get through this trying time, these acts must keep happening. We will make it through this catastrophe with the help of one another. Am Israel Chai.

Madi is a BBG from New York who loves to dance.
